Before you send

Most problems with hospital gifts come from three things: the unit doesn't allow the item, the patient's name or location is wrong, or the patient has already gone home. Our delivery guide covers how to avoid all three.

Common questions

What is the best time to send a gift to the hospital?

Weekday mornings are best. Many hospital mail rooms and volunteer desks have limited hours on evenings and weekends, so items can sit at a front desk until the next business day.

Can I send food to a hospital patient?

Only after checking. Many patients have restricted diets, allergies or swallowing difficulties. If food is allowed, choose sealed, shelf-stable items, and avoid anything needing refrigeration.

What happens if the patient is discharged before the gift arrives?

It depends on the sender. Many florists redeliver to a home address or issue a credit. Check the policy before ordering, or send to the patient's home instead.

Why won't the hospital tell me the patient's room number?

Hospitals protect patient privacy, and patients can choose not to be listed in the hospital directory. Ask the family for the unit and room number instead.

Can I send flowers to the hospital?

Often yes on general units, but ICU, oncology, transplant and burn units commonly restrict them. See our hospital flowers guide and call the unit to check.

Are balloons allowed in hospitals?

Latex balloons are commonly banned because of latex allergies. Foil (Mylar) balloons are often allowed on general units but may be restricted in the ICU.

Do hospitals have volunteers who deliver gifts to rooms?

Many hospitals have volunteer or mail teams that take deliveries from the front desk to patient units. Ask the hospital's main line how deliveries are handled.

Is this website connected to a hospital gift shop?

No. We are an independent guide and are not affiliated with any hospital, health system or hospital gift shop. We don't sell or deliver products ourselves.

What should I write in a get-well card?

Keep it short and warm, offer specific help, and avoid predictions or medical advice. See our library of more than 75 get-well card messages.
