Hospital Gifts for New Parents and Newborn Babies
The most appreciated maternity-ward gifts look after the new parent as much as the baby: comfortable recovery essentials, snacks for long nights, and one soft, washable item for the newborn. Keep it small — families leave the hospital with a lot to carry.

Before you visit or send
New parents are tired and the first days are busy with feeds, checks and visits from the care team. Ask before visiting, keep visits short, and remember that many maternity units have visitor and gift rules of their own — some neonatal intensive care units (NICU) don't allow flowers or balloons at all. A text saying "No need to reply" is a gift in itself.
Gifts for the birthing parent
- A soft, front-opening robe or nursing-friendly pajamas
- Non-slip socks or slippers for walking the halls
- Unscented lip balm, nipple balm and gentle hand cream
- A large reusable water bottle with a straw — hydration matters, especially when breastfeeding
- Dry shampoo, hair ties and facial wipes
- Snacks that can be eaten one-handed (check first if there are dietary needs)
- An extra-long phone charging cable
- A caffeine-free herbal tea selection for later at home
Gifts for the newborn
- Organic cotton or muslin swaddle blankets — always useful, easy to wash
- A soft knit hat or a set of newborn bodysuits in the 0–3 month size (newborn sizes are outgrown quickly)
- A cloth or board book for later reading together
- A keepsake: a baby milestone journal or a frame for the first photo
Skip stuffed animals and loose blankets intended for the crib: safe-sleep guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics advises keeping soft objects out of a baby's sleep space.
Gifts for big brothers and sisters
A small "big sibling" gift helps older children feel included during a big change.
- A "big brother" or "big sister" book or T-shirt
- A coloring set or sticker book for the hospital visit
- A small toy "from the baby"
Gifts for the support person
Partners and support people often camp out on a fold-out chair. A neck pillow, snacks, a coffee gift card and a phone charger are always welcome.
Practical gifts for going home
- A meal delivery gift card or a home-cooked meal sign-up organized among friends
- An offer to walk the dog, do a grocery run or drive older children to school
- A diaper subscription or a pack of diapers in size 1 (often more useful than newborn size)
Sending to the maternity ward
Use the parent's full legal name, the hospital's full address and the unit name ("Labor and Delivery" or "Mother-Baby Unit"). Babies are often listed under a parent's name for privacy and security. See our delivery guide for more.
Common questions
Can you send flowers to the maternity ward?
Many mother-baby units allow small arrangements, but NICUs and some maternity units do not. Call the unit to check, or send flowers to the family's home instead.
What size baby clothes should I buy?
0–3 months is usually safer than newborn size, which many babies outgrow within weeks.
